Navigating the Tanzanian Mining Sector - Legal & Practical Considerations and International Opportunities, for Investors, Operators, and Stakeholders meeting was a presentation by Tilla and Dorcas from EM & Co. Advocates MI’s member firm in Tanzania, on the mining and regulatory landscape there. During the session, they unpacked the legal framework, key regulatory institutions, types of mining licenses (prospecting, mining, special mining, and primary mining licenses), and recent regulatory developments including new local content requirements. The presenters explained that foreign companies must now enter joint ventures with 100% Tanzanian companies for certain services, requiring at least 20% local equity ownership. Mark, Russell, and other participants asked questions about the 16% government ownership requirement, the 30% share listing mandate on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange, and the impact of new regulations on foreign investment. The discussion also covered Tanzania's mining history, including how Anglo-American discoveries led to major gold mines like Barrick's operations, and current investment patterns with significant activity from China and South Africa.
