Residence permits are available for either self-employed people or freelancers, with different requirements according to Section 21 on the Residence Act - AufenthG. Also there ist the possibility to get a so called Schengenvisum that enables (potential) investors, entrepreneurs, and business travelers from third countries to establish business contacts, participate in industrial and trade fairs, and conduct an initial assessment of the geographical location and conditions for potential future investments. As a rule, a Schengen visa is therefore sufficient for business meetings with partners and the subsequent signing of contracts in Germany.
If you would like to apply for a visa to set up your own business, you have to fulfill the following general requirements:
You are under 45¸if you are above that age you will have to provide proof of adequate old age pension provisions
An economic interest in or a regional demand for your product or service has to be there
It is foreseeable that your company will have a positive effect on the economy
Financing will be fulfilled with your own capital or through a loan commitment
Depending on the specific venture financial background, however to strict minimum
If you are starting your own company, applying for a settlement permit (Niederlassungsserlaubnis) after three, but general five years is an option.
If you would like to apply for a visa to become a freelancer, you have to have fulfill the following general requirements:
Providing proof of sufficient funds to finance your projects and yourself
You have obtained any licences required to perform the job in question
Being under the age of 45, otherwise proof of adequate old-age pension provision
Residence permits are also available for highly qualified individuals according to Section 18 on the Residence Act - AufenthG (Blue Card), who have to fulfill the following general requirements:
Having a specific job offer
Having the approval of the Federal Employment Agency (where required), any necessary professional license, and recognized or equivalent qualifications
Both the applicant and the employer must confirm that the employment will actually be carried out
For applicants over the age of 45, a minimum salary threshold applies unless adequate pension provisions can be demonstrated
These requirements may be waived in cases of overriding public interest, particularly for economic or labor market reasons. The applicable minimum salary is published annually by the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community
