Start-up Denmark

it is possible through the program Start-up Denmark for foreign entrepreneurs to apply for residence and work permit.

The following conditions must be met in order to be granted a residence permit and run a business in Denmark based on the Start-up Denmark Scheme:

  • The business idea must be approved by the Danish Business Authority’s panel. After the approval of your business plan, you can apply for a residence and work permit under the Startup Denmark program at the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI).

  • The assessment of your business plan (the business or the Danish branch of the foreign business) is based on four criteria: how innovative is the business model, how attractive is the market, how scalable is the business model and what competencies and resources does the team possess?

  • It’s a requirement that there are specific Danish business interests speaking in favour of the establishment of the business in Denmark compared to other countries and therefore businesses such as restaurants, retail shops and small import/export enterprises are rejected.

  •  You must have an active and significant ownership of the company, and your presence must be necessary for the establishment of the business. This means that a person who solely have economic or financial interests in the business, for example shareholders, will not be considered for the program.

  •  You must provide documentation that you can support yourself financially for at least one year in Denmark, the equivalent of DKK 153,240 for you, or DKK 306,480 if you apply with your spouse and DKK 356,904 if you apply together with your spouse and one or more children (2025 level). A bank statement could be considered as sufficient documentation.

A residence and work permit based on the Start-up Denmark Scheme does allow family members to move to Denmark to live with you. Your spouse, registered or cohabiting partner as well as children under the age of 18 living at home can be granted a permit. If your family is accompanying you to Denmark, you must also provide documentation of your ability to support them, as mentioned above.

You can be granted a residence and work permit for a period of up to 2 years and it is possible to extend the permit for up to 3 years at a time. You must not give up your Danish address or stay abroad for longer than 6 successive months.
