Santa's Christmas Ding Dong

18 December 2009

On 16 December 2009, Strathclyde Fire & Rescue headquarters in Hamilton was host to the mock trial: ‘Santa’s Christmas Ding Dong.’ At the event, bto solicitors entertained over 50 members of SHEF (Safety, Health & Environmental Forum) and uniformed and support members of the Fire & Rescue Service.

The trial, presented with a touch of Christmas pantomime, involved Santa Claus being involved in an accident whilst delivering presents in Cumbernauld on Christmas Eve... As he glided downwards to land on the roof of 27 Paradise Avenue, he was pulled over and charged with breach of the peace, careless driving and driving without headlights. Santa pled not guilty to the charges and, following evidence, and a summing up by Sheriff Speirs, in true X-Factor fashion, the audience held Santa’s fate in their hands as they were encouraged to play the role of Jury and cast their vote.

Kay Pitt, Principal Solicitor and Head of Legal Services at Strathclyde Fire & Rescue, said: “I wish to express my thanks to all at bto for taking the time to produce and act out the mock trial and greatly amusing the audience.”

Bill Speirs, Partner and Head of Litigation at bto, aka Sheriff Speirs for the trial, commented: bto was delighted to be involved in highlighting potential legal issues for fire and rescue staff and SHEF members in a humorous manner. bto has a top ranked Health & Safety team and we regard the provision of innovative training for our clients as a very important part of our service. This is the third event of this kind that bto has presented in 2009.”
