Cairncross & Hempelmann proudly announces that Principals John W. Hempelmann and Donald E. Marcy have been selected by their peers to be included in the 2010 edition of The Best Lawyers in America® in the specialty of Land Use & Zoning Law.
Mr. Hempelmann is one of the founding partners of Cairncross & Hempelmann, with nearly 40 years of experience and is recognized as one of the premier land use, natural resources and real estate development attorneys in the state of Washington. He has worked extensively to help form the legislation that governs Washington’s land use law. John has been involved in many innovative projects including major open space and conservation transactions in Washington and Maine, the development of Suncadia (Washington’s first master planned resort), and the development of the first Major Industrial Development under the provisions of the State Growth Management Act. John has been repeatedly recognized as a “Super Lawyer” by Washington Law & Politics and as a “Top Lawyer” by Seattle Magazine. John was named one of Seattle’s “Top Business Lawyers” in 2006, 2007 and 2008 by Seattle Business Monthly and was added to the “League of Justice,” a list of Washington’s most amazing attorneys, by Washington CEO magazine. He has also been recognized as a “Top Ranked” ranked lawyer by the international organization publishing the Chambers Guides.
Mr. Marcy advises clients on land use and real estate development matters. He has extensive knowledge of and practical experience with the application of land use laws including the Growth Management Act, the State Environmental Policy Act, the Shoreline Management Act, and wetlands regulations, such as Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. His clients include developers and owners of industrial, commercial, retail, institutional, and residential properties. He also assists clients in real estate transactions and general real estate issues. Don currently serves as the Chairman of the Government Affairs Committee of the Washington State Chapter of NAIOP, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association. He has also served four terms as a member of the Board of Directors of the Washington State Chapter of NAIOP. Don has been named a “Top Lawyer” and a “Top 100 Washington Super Lawyer,” and has also been named “Top Ranked” by international ranking organization Chambers USA.
