Cairncross & Hempelmann Scores Well on Diversity Survey

20 May 2009

A recent survey by the Minority Bar Associations of Washington Joint Committee on Law Firm Diversity reveals that Cairncross & Hempelmann was included among firms receiving the highest overall scores in demographics, diversity efforts and programs. In fact, based on the criteria listed above, here are the rankings: Perkins Coie; Heller Ehrman (before its dissolution); Helsell Fetterman; Cairncross & Hempelmann; Davis Wright Tremaine; K&L Gates; Graham & Dunn; Stoel Rives; Dorsey & Whitney; and Bullivant Houser Bailey.

The report’s goals included identifying those firms that support overall diversity efforts and provide examples of diversity successes. The Law Firm Diversity Questionnaire was submitted to the 50 largest law firms with offices in Washington State in May 2008. Of those 50 firms, 32 responded.

Sophia Bell Lavin, Director of Human Resources, has (among others) been instrumental in leading the diversity initiative at Cairncross & Hempelmann, “we are very pleased to have been well recognized by the results of this survey, but we know that diversity is something about which law firms need to remain vigilant. Increasing and supporting diversity within our firm is truly important to us and we continue to strive to see that our firm diversity closely reflects the diversity of our community.”

The Law Firm Diversity Report was created and executed by: Asian Bar Association of Washington; Korean American Bar Association of Washington; Latina/o Bar Association of Washington; Loren Miller Bar Association; Northwest Indian Bar Association; QLaw (the GLBT Bar Association of Washington); South Asian Bar Association of Washington; Vietnamese American Bar Association of Washington; and Washington Women Lawyers -- all in consultation with the Washington Attorneys with Disabilities Association.
