bto joins bid to eliminate sub-standard housing in Malawi

This summer, Patrice Fabien, a Partner in bto’s Social Housing team, and his wife Fiona joined a group of 15 volunteers from Scotland, including a party from Dunfermline Building Society, to spend a week working in Malawi as part of a house-building project organised by Habitat For Humanity. 

bto made a donation towards the project and with the full support of bto behind them, Patrice and Fiona helped to build two houses as part of a Global Village team.

The project in which they were involved is based in the capital, Lilongwe, where they worked side-by-side with local people to help them build simple, decent homes. As a result of this charity project, families have the opportunity to buy their houses at an affordable price with an interest-free loan. The new homeowners are all on low incomes and were living in poverty housing.

Patrice said: “We admire Habitat for Humanity's mission to eliminate substandard housing worldwide and its current achievement of building one house every 23 minutes. We wanted to be involved in this effort and are pleased to have made a positive physical and monetary contribution to such a worthwhile cause.”
